Cabana Buta

Cabana Buta is a mountain hut at roughly 1580 m, located in the south of the Retezat Mountains, in the limestone area of the Lesser Retezat (Retezatul Mic). It is a quieter base than those in the north of the massif, ideal for those seeking less crowded trails.

Set in a clearing below the southern ridge, the hut is surrounded by distinctive scenery, where the limestone relief of the Lesser Retezat contrasts with the granite of the glacial cirques to the north. The quiet and the wildness of the area are its main draws.

Getting there

Access comes from the south, from the Câmpu lui Neag / Buții Gorge area, by forest road and then on foot. The climb to the hut follows a red cross marking (or stripe, depending on the variant), with an indicative time of 2-3 hours from the end of the road.

The access road can be demanding by car; find out about its condition and parking points before setting off.

What you can do from here

From Buta you can link up with the heart of Retezat and the limestone area:

• a traverse toward the lakes area and Lake Bucura via the southern saddles
• outings toward the peaks of the Lesser Retezat and the limestone ridge
• continuing toward the main ridge and Peleaga Peak for multi-day hikes

Tips

The good season is summer and early autumn; in late spring patches of snow may remain on shaded slopes. Check availability in advance, as the hut is isolated and has limited capacity.

Prepare for self-sufficiency: water, food and bad-weather gear. Check the weather and Salvamont mountain rescue before any long outing.
