Cabana Curmătura

Cabana Curmătura is a mountain hut set at roughly 1470 m, in the heart of Piatra Craiului National Park. It is the main base for exploring the massif's spectacular limestone ridge and one of the most beloved refuges in the Carpathians.

The hut sits in a forested saddle, beneath the steep limestone walls, a welcoming place where hikers gather before or after ridge outings. The views toward the cliffs of Piatra Craiului are striking even from the hut itself.

Getting there

The classic access starts from the town of Zărnești. From here you follow the road and trail through the Zărnești Gorges, on the Zărnești – Cabana Curmătura route, marked with a blue triangle (or blue stripe, depending on the variant), with an indicative climb of 2-3 hours.

The trail passes through shady gorges and forest and is accessible to families with older children who are reasonably fit.

What you can do from here

Curmătura is the gateway to the Piatra Craiului ridge, one of the most exposed hikes in the country. Objectives:

• the climb to La Om Peak (Piscul Baciului), the highest point of the massif
• the ridge routes, with cable-secured sections for the experienced
• easier walks on the trails around the hut and through the national park

Tips

The ideal season runs from late spring through autumn; the full ridge requires experience and stable weather. Check availability in advance — the hut is very popular on weekends and holidays.

Respect the national park rules, stay on the trails and beware of wildlife. Check the weather and the Salvamont mountain rescue number before heading out.
