Cabana Dochia

Cabana Dochia is a mountain hut at roughly 1750 m, built on the plateau of Ceahlău, right beneath Toaca Peak. It is the main base for outings in the Ceahlău massif, one of the most imposing and beloved mountains in Moldavia.

From the hut, wide panoramas open over the high plateau and the massif's characteristic rock formations. Its central position makes it an ideal starting point for reaching the summits and for watching sunrise from the ridge.

Getting there

The best-known access starts from the Durău resort, on the Durău – Toaca route, marked with a red stripe, with an indicative climb of 3-4 hours through forest and then onto the plateau. A shorter variant climbs from Izvorul Muntelui, on the eastern slope.

The trails are well marked, but the elevation gain is large; set off in the morning and allow time for the descent as well.

What you can do from here

From Dochia the massif's emblematic landmarks are within reach:

  • the short climb to Toaca Peak and its viewing platform
  • plateau routes toward Ocolașul Mare Peak, the highest point
  • descents on different slopes, toward Durău or Izvorul Muntelui
  • connections to the Bicaz Gorges area via driving routes

Tips

The safe season runs from late spring through autumn; in winter the plateau is exposed to wind and blizzards. Check availability in advance — the hut is very popular, especially in summer and on holidays.

Bring warm clothes even in summer, as the wind on the plateau chills sharply. Check the weather and Salvamont mountain rescue before your outing.
