Retezat is the wildest massif in the Romanian Carpathians and a national park with over 80 glacial lakes. There are no cable cars and no alpine roads here — everything is earned on foot. Prepare seriously: the routes are long, the markings demand attention, and the weather changes fast above 2,000 m. Check the weather and read the Retezat zone page before you set out.
Ziua 1 — Climbing to Bucura Lake
Start from Cârnic and climb via the Pietrele – Bucura Lake route toward the heart of the massif. Roughly 5–7 hours of walking to Bucura Lake, the largest glacial lake in Romania, where the camping plateau also lies. Camp by the lake or stay at a chalet — see chalets.
Ziua 2 — Bucura and Peleaga
The big day: the classic Bucura – Peleaga route to the massif's highest peak. Roughly 6–8 hours, with a climb over scree and panoramas across the string of lakes. Return to the tent for a second night.
Ziua 3 — Descent
Walk back down the same route toward Cârnic, with stops at the smaller lakes. Allow plenty of time — descending over scree is slower than it looks.
Tips
- Chamois and marmots are often seen; do not feed them.
- Spring water is good, but filter it anywhere animals graze upstream.
- There is no phone coverage in the valleys; tell someone your route.
- Respect the park: camp only in permitted zones, carry your rubbish out. To unwind after the hike, see guesthouses in the valley.
