Cabana Pietrele – Lacul Bucura

Moderate3.5 h7 km

The route from Cabana Pietrele to Lake Bucura is the classic way into the heart of the Retezat, a moderate tour that climbs past glacial lakes to the largest lake in Romania. You start in the forest, cross the alpine zone and arrive in the Bucura cirque, which also holds the massif's main campsite. This is the path taken by almost everyone who comes for a few days in Retezat National Park.

Figures are indicative: reckon ~3.5 hours of climbing, ~7 km and +~700 m of gain, depending on pace and weather. You'll find water at springs and the lakes en route, but don't rely on them untreated. Treat the numbers as references.

On the trail

You set off from Cabana Pietrele on the blue stripe heading south, climbing gradually toward the main ridge and then to Bucura. Check the exact marking locally, especially in the upper section.

  1. Start (Cabana Pietrele). You climb from the hut on a forest path with a sustained grade, until you emerge into the alpine zone.
  2. Toward the cirque lakes. The path passes glacial lakes (the Pietrele–Bucura area), with springs at the stream sources.
  3. Curmătura Bucurei. The key crossing point over the main ridge; from here the Bucura cirque opens up.
  4. Descent to Lake Bucura (2040 m). You drop into the cirque toward Lake Bucura, with a campsite and access to the massif's summits.

From Bucura you can continue to Peleaga Peak or to Lake Zănoaga. Camp only in the areas the park permits.

Equipment and difficulty

Moderate difficulty, owing to length, a sustained climb and altitude.

  • Boots with good grip — the path alternates forest, roots and rock.
  • Water for the climb + a way to refill/purify at the lakes.
  • Tent and bivouac gear if you stay at Bucura.
  • Insulation + hardshell, headlamp, map/GPS, first aid.
  • Fitness for a multi-hour climb with a pack.

See the Retezat guide and info on guesthouses in the access area.

Safety

An accessible route, but on real mountain terrain where weather and fatigue matter most.

  • Changeable weather — storms come quickly in the cirque; start early. Check the weather.
  • Fog — up high, poor visibility makes it easy to lose the marking; carry a map.
  • Slippery ground — in rain, forest roots and slabs become slick.
  • Residual snow — early in the season, hard snow tongues can linger around the Curmătura.
  • Protected area — no open fire, no litter, camping only where permitted.

When to turn back: if the weather breaks on the climb or you fall behind, head back to Pietrele while you are still in the forest and safe. Read the mountain safety and weather guide.
