Harghita and Covasna are the land of mineral waters, volcanic mofettes and Romania's only crater lake. It is a slow, relaxing tour, with short walks and plenty of time for baths and healing waters. Perfect when you want mountains without exhausting effort. Check the weather and read the Harghita – Covasna zone page.
Ziua 1 — Băile Tușnad and Saint Ana Lake
Base yourself in Băile Tușnad, the smallest town-resort in the country. Do the Băile Tușnad – Saint Ana Lake route up to Saint Ana Lake, the only volcanic lake in Romania, nestled in a crater. Roughly 2–3 hours return. Spend the night in Tușnad — see accommodation.
Ziua 2 — Mofettes and mineral waters
A relaxing day: explore the mofettes (carbon dioxide emanations used therapeutically) and the mineral springs in the area, part of an old spa tradition. Combine it with short walks through forests and Székely villages. For treatments, see also the thermal baths.
Ziua 3 — Covasna and surroundings
Move toward Covasna, "the resort of a thousand springs", and finish with warm baths and a last walk. It is a peaceful finale, good for recharging.
Tips
- In mofettes do not bend down: the gas is heavier than air and pools at the bottom.
- Mineral waters have strong tastes — sample in moderation.
- Tușnad is visited often by bears — do not leave food in sight.
- For meals and rest, the Székely guesthouses are hospitable — see guesthouses.
