The Prahova Valley is Romania's most accessible mountain area: under two hours from Bucharest, with frequent trains and resorts lined up one after another. This weekend blends a little history, a serious dose of alpine plateau, and good food in Sinaia. Before you leave, check the weather — the plateau can be windy and foggy even in summer — and the state of the roads if you go up in winter.
Ziua 1 — Sinaia and Cota 2000
Spend the morning in Sinaia: Peleș Castle and the monastery deserve a few hours. Then take the cable car from the centre up to Cota 2000 and set out onto the plateau. With good weather and rested legs, do the classic route toward Babele and Omu Peak — roughly 5–6 hours return to Omu, or just 1–2 hours to Babele and the Sphinx. Sleep in Sinaia or up at a chalet on the plateau; see the accommodation options and the list of chalets.
Ziua 2 — Bușteni, Babele and the Sphinx
Move by car or train to Bușteni (roughly 15 minutes) and take the cable car toward Babele. From the top you have the Sphinx, Babele and Omu Peak, the highest point in the Bucegi, within easy reach. The plateau walk is easy and panoramic; riding the cable car back down spares your knees. More about the region on the Prahova Valley – Bucegi page.
Tips
- Cable cars have long queues on summer weekends and on snow days — arrive early.
- Weather on the plateau changes fast; carry a windproof layer and water even for short walks.
- In winter the routes to Omu require experience and gear; stay near Babele if you are not prepared.
