Cabana Pietrele is a mountain hut at roughly 1480 m, regarded as the gateway into the heart of the Retezat Mountains. From here begin the finest trails toward the glacial lakes and toward Bucura, the largest glacial lake in Romania.
Set in a clearing surrounded by spruce, at the foot of the glacial cirques, the hut is the favorite starting point for hikers who want to explore the Retezat's "land of blue waters." The scenery here is among the wildest in the Carpathians.
Getting there
Road access reaches the Cârnic / Pietrele area via the forest road climbing from Nucșoara, through the Râul Mare valley. From the parking area you reach the hut on a trail in about 20-30 minutes of easy walking.
By car, the forest road can be rough in places; check its condition and parking availability before setting out.
What you can do from here
Cabana Pietrele is a trailhead for outings toward the lakes and peaks of the massif:
- Pietrele – Lacul Bucura, toward the country's largest glacial lake
- the climb to Lake Bucura and on along the ridge
- the Bucura – Peleaga link toward Peleaga Peak, the highest in Retezat
Tips
The recommended season runs from June to October; snow can linger in the cirques late into summer. Check availability in advance — the area is very popular, and camping is regulated within the national park.
Carry gear for sudden weather changes and enough water. Check the weather and Salvamont mountain rescue before climbing to the ridge.
