Prăpăstiile Zărneștiului
The Zărnești Gorges (Prăpăstiile Zărneștiului) are a narrow, dramatic limestone canyon at the entrance to Piatra Craiului National Park: an easy walk through a defile, between vertical walls that rise tens of metres on either side. It is one of the most accessible routes in the massif, perfect for a short family outing with little effort and big scenery.
The figures are rough estimates: about 1.5 hours, ~4 km and a gentle climb of roughly +200 m. You mostly follow the valley floor, almost flat at first, with easy gradients toward the end. Adjust the estimates to your pace and to how busy it is.
On the trail
You start in Zărnești, following the blue triangle waymark that leads into the gorge.
- Entering the defile. The valley road quickly narrows and the limestone walls close in on both sides. In places the gorge is so tight that the sky shows only as a strip.
- Through the gorge. You walk along the valley bed, usually dry in summer but which can carry water or ice in the cold season. The ground is rocky, with shaded, cool sections even on scorching days.
- Leaving the gorge. The defile gradually opens, the gradient rises slightly and the path climbs toward the forest at the foot of the saddle.
- Toward Curmătura. The route continues gently uphill and links to the Cabana Curmătura area, where you will usually find hot food and a place to rest. Check opening hours locally.
From here you can descend via the classic Zărnești – Cabana Curmătura route to make a loop, or return back through the gorge.
Gear and difficulty
Difficulty is easy, accessible even to those without experience.
- Trail shoes or light boots with grip — the valley bed is rocky and damp in places.
- Water (1–1.5 l); bring it from the start, do not count on springs in the gorge.
- A thin extra layer — it is noticeably cooler inside the defile than outside.
- A rain shell; in the gorge, heavy rain can send water down the valley floor.
See the gear guide and the local guesthouses hub.
Safety
The route is gentle, but it is still a limestone mountain environment.
- Rockfall — the walls are high; do not stop under overhangs and avoid scree zones.
- Water and ice — in spring or after rain the valley floor can be slippery or wet; in winter icy patches appear.
- Weather — in a downpour the gorge can gather water fast; avoid the defile under storm warnings. Check the weather.
- Wildlife — you are in a national park, in bear country; never leave food in sight.
When to turn back: if it rains hard or water rises on the valley floor, leave the gorge and head back toward Zărnești. Also read the safety and weather guide.
