Cabana Rarău – Pietrele Doamnei
The hike from the Rarău Chalet to the Pietrele Doamnei (Lady's Rocks) is the short jewel of the Bukovina mountains: an easy walk to the spectacular limestone towers that crown the Rarău massif. It is easy, short and family-friendly, also reachable by car along the Transrarău, ideal for an outing of a few hours.
The figures are indicative: roughly 1 hour one way, +~150 m elevation gain, red stripe waymark. Real time depends on pace and how long you linger at the viewpoints — the rocks invite plenty of photos.
On the trail
You set off from the Rarău Chalet (~1500 m), a key landmark for orientation and rest, following the red stripe waymark toward Pietrele Doamnei.
- Start (Rarău Chalet). Pick up the red stripe next to the chalet. The path starts gently through spruce forest and meadows, with a mild climb.
- Path to the rocks. The terrain alternates between shady forest and openings toward the ridge. The first views over the Bukovina foothills and the massif usually appear here.
- Foot of Pietrele Doamnei. You reach the base of the limestone towers — dramatic formations bursting out of the forest. Protected area: stay on the path and do not damage the rocks.
- Pietrele Doamnei viewpoint. The end point, with a wide panorama over Rarău, the Obcine hills and, on a clear day, toward Giumalău. The paths from the chalet and from the Transrarău often meet here.
Access is also possible along the ridge road Transrarău, and the sight belongs to the Bukovina–Rarău region. From here you can explore other mountain trails or find lodging at nearby guesthouses. Also check the weather before you go.
Equipment and difficulty
Difficulty easy, but mountain terrain with rock — good footwear matters.
- Mountain boots or trail shoes with a grippy sole (the path can be damp and rooty).
- An extra layer; on the ridge, beside the rocks, it is cooler and windy.
- Water and snacks; do not rely on safe water sources on the path.
- A rain shell; the weather changes fast even on short outings.
Details in the equipment guide.
Safety
It is an easy outing, but Pietrele Doamnei are steep cliffs; treat them with respect.
- Edges and rocks — do not climb the formations and keep children away from drop-offs; wet stone is slippery.
- Fog — can quickly hide the red stripe waymark and the viewpoints; follow the path and do not improvise.
- Changeable weather — sudden rain makes the rock slippery; in a storm get off the ridge and avoid exposed ground.
Retreat option: the Rarău Chalet is very close and is the best shelter landmark if the weather turns or the children tire. Turn back in good time. Check the weather and the safety guide.
